Growing Spiritually as a Married Couple: 3 Tips to strengthen your faith walk

One of the interesting things that we recognize when persons take a trip to the altar to be wed is that soon after, many persons tend to dwindle in their faith. This does not automatically mean that the couple has forgotten God. Rather, one of the major reasons is because these couples haven't found their rhythm in journeying together spiritually.

Here are three tips that can help you to develop a rhythm as you journey together spiritually:

Take note of (and respect) your partner's style or preferred way of worshipping God.

The truth is that there's the unspoken expectation that once two-become-one, it somehow means that individuality and the habits developed as a single, whole individual suddenly go through the door. That's actually not the case, and couples learn this as they journey with each other, have disagreements, and more.

This discovery also plays out through methods of worshipping or purposefully connecting with God. When a married couple is truly is desirous of establishing their marriage on God as their solid rock, they acknowledge the necessity of building together but what happens then they can't relate to each other in those efforts? What happens when the husband prefers to connect through sermons while the wife prefers to connect through worship music?

Your spouse deserves the space and freedom to nurture the specific way they use to connect with God in their quiet place

Make deliberate effort to pray and learn more about God - together

Joint home devotions, worshiping at the same church building, watching videos, attending the same Bible Study sessions; it all plays a part in helping to nurture your joint spiritual walk. This is because you'll be learning more about God and growing - together!

God encourages us to fellowship with one another, and the marriage unit is one of the best opportunities for true fellowship; "For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them.”

So, by choosing specific instances to grow in God together, it will definitely add to the foundation of joint devotion to God and the marriage overall.

Learn to speak openly with each other about spiritual matters

What this does is to create a safe space for spiritual expression which facilitates an understanding of each other's perspectives.

Often times, this will help to open your eyes to how your spouse views God and matters of the Kingdom and vice versa.

Interestingly, this helps to add a new shade to your bond as the matters of faith discussed would be nested in deeper conversation.
